Multiple sclerosis is a nervous system disease that affects your brain and spinal cord. It damages the myelin sheath, the material that surrounds and protects your nerve cells. This damage slows down or blocks messages between your brain and your body, leading to the symptoms of Visual disturbances, muscle weakness, trouble with coordination and balance,
sensations such as numbness, prickling, or "pins and needles", thinking and memory problems.
No one knows what causes MS. It may be an autoimmune disease, which happens when your body attacks itself. Multiple sclerosis affects woman more than men. It often begins between the ages of 20 and 40.There is no cure for MS, but medicines may slow it down and help control symptoms.

Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affect a person's ability to move and to maintain balance and posture. The disorders appear in the first few years of life. Usually they do not get worse over time. People with cerebral palsy may have difficulty walking. They may also have trouble with tasks such as writing or using scissors. Some have other medical conditions, including seizure disorders or mental impairment. Cerebral palsy happens when the areas of the brain that control movement and posture do not develop correctly or get damaged. There is no cure for cerebral palsy, but treatment can improve the lives of those who have it. Treatment includes medicines, braces, and physical, occupational and speech therapy.

Frequent Marijuana Users
are invited for a research study. Researchers are studying the effects of chronic marijuana use on brain structure, function, and mental abilities. The study involves a lengthy screening appointment, followed by two overnight hospitalizations at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Volunteers are compensated for participating (and for out-of-town travel). Brain imaging studies are done and volunteers take achievement tests and tests of various mental abilities. Volunteers must be current marijuana users, be from 24 to 44 years old, and be right-handed. Information about the identity of volunteers will be treated confidentially.
