Homeostasis - Global Homeostatic Regulation

Variously described as "Super-Modulator", "The Normalizer" and "Global Homeostatic Regulator", the endocannabinoid system is responsible for maintaining homeostasis - crucial balancing acts that the brain constantly performs in hormonal and endocrine systems, cellular chemistry and organ systems all over the body.

Several of our conference faculty have referred to the endocannabinoid system's role in their field of study. At our Third Clinical conference on Cannabis Therapeutics held in Charlottesville, VA in May of 2004, Dr. Robert Melamede brings together quantum physics, chaos theory, patterns of emergent energy systems and human physiology to visualize how and why this intricate system works.

Dr. Melamede, Associate Professor and Biology Chairman, Biology Department, University of Colorado, explains how the Endocannabinoid System functions as a "Global Homeostatic Regulator", balancing several organ systems. He theorizes that, "Free Radicals are the Friction of Life. Endocannabinoids are the Oil of Life."

At the same 2004 conference, Dr. Geoffrey Guy points out the modulatory effect of  phytocannabinoid extracts of natural cannabis used in his company's oromuscosal spray - SativexTM.

"From Plant to Prescription Medicine" - Introduced by Don Wirtshafter, Geoffrey Guy, Founder and Executive Chairman, GW Pharmaceuticals, UK, explains why extracts of Phyto-Cannabinoids THC & CBD need to represent the natural balance of the Cannabis plant. Describing cannabinoid action as a "Super-Modulator", Dr. Guy discusses clinical trials involving Multiple Sclerosis (MS), spinal cord injury and neuropathic pain.
